分かりやすい The（定冠詞）の用法
Theの使い方は難しいですが、一度覚えてしまえば少なくとも嫌いじゃなくなることは間違いありません。英語のサイト「Learn English」から分かりやすい説明を書き出してみます。
基本的に聞き手が何を指しているのかを理解できる時、名詞の前にtheを使います。
1. 地球上に1つしかない、一人しかいないとき
The Pope is visiting Russia. ローマ教皇はロシアを訪問している。
The moon is very bright tonight. 今夜の月は大変明るい。（地球に月は一つしかない）
Who is the president of France? フランスの大統領は誰ですか？（現役大統領は一人）
同じ理由で、最上級を表す時の形容詞にも定冠詞を使用します。
He is the tallest boy in the class.彼はクラスで一番背が高い男子だ。
It is the oldest building in the town.これは町で一番古い建物だ。
2.その文脈において1つしかないとき
We live in a small house next to the church. (= the church in our village)
私たちは教会の隣の小さな家に住んでいます。 （=私たちの村の教会）
Dad, can I borrow the car? (= the car that belongs to our family)
お父さん、車を借りてもいい？ （=家族所有の車）
When we stayed at my grandmother’s house, we went to the beach every day. (= the beach near my grandmother’s house)
祖母の家に泊まったときは、毎日ビーチに行った。 （=祖母の家の近くのビーチ）
Look at the boy over there. (= the boy I am pointing at)
あの男の子を見てください。 （=私が指している男の子）
3.すでに言及されていて、どれを指しているのかが分かる時
A young man tried to rob a jewellery shop in Richmond. The man used a hammer to smash the windows in the shop.
若い男がリッチモンドの宝石店を襲った。 その男はハンマーでその店の窓を壊した。
4.そのカテゴリー全体を指す時（The+単数形）
The wolf is not really a dangerous animal. (= Wolves are not really dangerous animals.)
オオカミは本当は危険な動物ではない。
The kangaroo is found only in Australia. (= Kangaroos are found only in Australia.)
カンガルーはオーストラリアでのみ見られる。
The heart pumps blood around the body. (= Hearts pump blood around bodies.)
心臓は体の周りに血液を送り出します。 （=心臓は体の周りに血液を送り出す。）
同じ理由で、楽器にも定冠詞を付けます。
Joe plays the piano really well. ジョーはピアノをとても上手に弾く。
She is learning the guitar. 彼女はギターを練習している。
5.システムやサービス全体を意味する時
How long does it take on the train? 電車に乗るのにどれくらい時間がかかる？
I heard it on the radio.それをラジオで聞いた。
You should tell the police. 警察に通報したほうがいいよ。
6.形容詞にtheを付けて「金持ち」「貧乏人」「高齢者」「失業者」など人の分類を表す
Life can be very hard for the poor. 貧しい人々にとって、人生は非常に困難だ。
The rich should pay more taxes. お金持ちはもっと税金を払うべきだ。
She works for a group to help the disabled. 彼女は障害者の支援グループで働いている。
7.定冠詞の付く名詞
通常、人の名前や町の名前にtheは付けません。
William Shakespeare wrote Hamlet. ウィリアムシェイクスピアが書いたハムレット。
Paris is the capital of France. パリはフランスの首都だ。
Iran is in Asia. イランはアジアにある。
でも、次のような名前の定冠詞は使用します。
国の名前に、王国、州、または共和国が含まれる場合
the United Kingdom イギリス連邦
the Kingdom of Bhutan ブータン王国
the United States アメリカ合衆国
the People’s Republic of China 中華人民共和国
8.名前の中に複数形の名詞がある国名
the Netherlands オランダ
the Philippinesフィリピン
9.山脈、群島、川、海、海、運河などの地理的特徴
the Himalayas ヒマラヤ山脈
the Canaries カナリア諸島
the Atlantic (Ocean) 大西洋
the Amazon アマゾン川
the Panama Canal パナマ運河
10.新聞
The Times タイムズ紙
The Washington Post ワシントンポスト紙
11.有名な建物や芸術作品
the Empire State Building エンパイアステイトビル

12.組織
the United Nations 国際連合

ただし、ホテルなどの名前が所有者の名前である場合、theは付けません。
